Jess Quinn was one of our very first KICPOD guests way back in 2019. This week Jess returns, but this time for KICBUMP, after welcoming her first daughter Marla into the world last November.  In our first conversation with Jess she shared her story of childhood cancer and having one of her legs amputated when she was nine years old. "My partner wants kids and I don’t. Should we break up?" - with Laura Henshaw

For many women in their 20’s and 30’s, the tick of the biological clock can be deafening. We’re told our fertility falls off a cliff at 35 years old, so if we want children, we’d better get moving. When you add on messaging around the desire to be a “young” mum to keep up with your children, this only adds to the pressure that many women feel to make a decision that they don’t feel ready to make.  But what if women’s fertility didn’t fall off a cliff at 35? What if it was a gradual decline rather than a sharp cliff? And what if we had role models of women having children later in their life to see that it’s not only possible, but can be just as good (and maybe even better!) than having children younger. In this episode Laura speaks with two women at different stages in their motherhood journey. Leonie had her first child at 30 years old and wishes she’d waited longer. Sharyn had her first child at 43 years old and has no trouble keeping up with him. IUD or I-U-Don’t? Steph’s big decision

The most common fear we heard from you while planning this series, was what children would do to your career. Progression, relevancy, loss of superannuation, loss of identity, and comments like "why would you have kids if you're going to go back to work," all contribute to women making the decision to have children. And with increased rates of homelessness among women in Australia, and women retiring with 28% less superannuation than men, these fears are not baseless. But having children doesn’t have to end or derail your career. Children could even help your career. We hate when people say “stay in your lane”. Get out of your lane!!

Whether it’s biological, circumstantial, financial, environmental, a result of trauma, or simply because you don’t want to, the reasons why people decide to be childfree are as diverse as the reasons why people decide to be parents. For many people, the decision to be childfree is met with comments like “you’ll change your mind,” or “you won’t know real love until you have a child,” or “what if you regret it?”. And with so few childfree role models showing us what a childfree life could look like, these responses can be hard to deny. In this episode, Laura speaks with three childfree women. Danni Duncan is a New Zealand based childfree content creator who has dedicated her life to showing people that a childfree life is not only possible, but can be totally fulfilling and empowering. Everything we do to feel safe while running as women

In January, one of our Kic community members, Ellie, messaged us on Instagram asking to share her story of being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer diagnosis at just 31 years old. Ellie noticed a lump in one of her breasts last August. When it didn’t go away, Ellie made an appointment to get it checked out by her GP. Within days, Ellie underwent an ultrasound and biopsy to find out it was breast cancer, which led to more biopsies, an egg retrieval and chemotherapy. Ellie’s plans for a holiday in Europe, starting a family, and her work as a midwife &amp; nurse, were all put on pause while she underwent six months of chemo. We spoke to Ellie a few weeks before she was having a surgery to determine whether or not she would need a double mastectomy. Your most cooked break up stories!

Kim was 27 weeks pregnant with her first daughter when she noticed a tiny amount of bleeding. After almost a week in hospital, and a traumatic birth experience, Kim gave birth to Elsie. Elsie then spent 11 weeks in the NICU and in that time, Kim and her husband Greg learned that Elsie had suffered a brain injury through pregnancy or birth and she was given a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. In this episode, Kim shares her story with Steph: her mostly straightforward pregnancy with Elsie, Elsie’s traumatic birth, their NICU stay and how it felt to finally hold Elsie for the first time, learning of Elsie’s brain injury, finding support online from parents of children with disabilities, and the decision to have a second baby. Savannah Sachdev has gone for a run nearly 850 days in a row now, and although that may only seem possible from someone who is a pro runner with extreme motivation, for Savannah, she began running purely for the amazing effect it has on her mental health. Laura expresses her fear of not coping

Why you might currently be lacking motivation

Pelvic floor dysfunction is super common, particularly during your childbearing years. But just because it’s common, it doesn’t mean we should do nothing about it! Rachel Fitt is a Melbourne based Pelvic Floor &amp; Continence Physiotherapist (and Steph’s physio actually), and in today’s KICBUMP episode she explains the importance of looking after your pelvic floor, and what to do if you suspect something is not right.   Steph also shares her own experience of having a bladder prolapse after giving birth to her son Harvey, and asks Rachel what would have happened if she ignored the symptoms and not have gone for an appointment. A shocking gender imbalance in the workplace
